A Path to the Future: Music of Discovery

Sunday, April 29, 2012; 3:30 PM
Mount Mercy University

Pianist and Mount Mercy music faculty member Tony Nickle will accompany Goeldner and Carr for the performance, which will include works Gustav Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer and Rückert Lieder, and arias by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Korngold, Barber, and more. Audience members will enjoy this beautiful and lyrical performance as two Iowa natives return to participate in the first musical performance held in Mount Mercy’s new University Center.

Carr, a native of Quasqueton, Iowa, is an award-winning performer, most recently winning the Kansas City District in the Met Opera’s National Council Auditions, and also won the vocal division at the NAFTZGER music competition in Wichita, Kan. He also performed with University of Missouri-Kansas City orchestra as a winner of the conservatory’s Concerto/Aria Competition. He is currently the baritone apprentice artist for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s 2011-2012 season, in which he will lend his voice to each of the four mainstage productions.

Previous appearances include Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre as Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, and Sacristan in Tosca. Carr also performed with the Des Moines Metropolitan Opera’s apprentice program in 2010 and 2011, covering the role of Schaunard in La Boheme, and the husband in the apprentice production of Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tiresias.

A graduate of Simpson College, where he studied vocal performance, Carr currently attends the University of Missouri-Kansas City, pursuing a master’s degree in vocal performance.

Goeldner has been praised as “excitingly radiant and agile” by The New York Times. Her mezzo soprano vocals have gained world-wide recognition, and were reviewed as having “liquid plangent tones…crystal-clear diction and contained, but simmering, intensity,” by Newsday.

Most recently Goeldner performed in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Anna Bolena, as Jane Seymour. She made an appearance in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2010-2011 season, where she sang the title role in Carmen and the comedic role of Pitti-Sing in The Mikado. She also reprised her role as Erika in Vanessa, with the RSO-Vienna, and performed Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the Salzburg Orchester Solisten.

Goeldner had a big start to 2012 as she made her debut with Covent Garden, singing the role of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Royal Ballet in February. She also performed the role of Gluck’s Orfeo for Arizona Opera this month, and is spending time recording with The Prairie Song Project. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Iowa, and resides in Salzburg, Austria.
