  Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered

Tuesday, May 01, 2012; 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Dreamwell Theatre

Old standards, show girls, tap dancers, the glamour of a 1950s night club – plus the chance to support an award-winning, nonprofit volunteer theatre company – will have you Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered for one night only on Tuesday, May 1, at 7:00 pm in the Gilbert Street Piano Lounge, 347 S. Gilbert Street, Iowa City.

Dreamwell Theatre’s fundraiser offers a trip back to the romance of a night on the town when the best singers sang the best music. You’ll hear “Night and Day,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “Cheek to Cheek,” and many other old favorites. Tickets are just $15, and include a complimentary dessert table. There will also be a cash bar.

Carol Grow Johnk, director of Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered, is excited about the show, especially the incredible locally known talent. She says, “I’m just thrilled with how things are going so far. We have an amazing cast, with amazing voices, and the singers’ enthusiasm for the project is an absolute joy.”

Vocalists are George McTyre, Chris Okiishi, Robert Kemp, Krista Neumann, Deandrea Watkins, and Megan Sands, all accompanied by Dick Caplan on the piano. And you can’t do a night club show without dancing. The Les Dames du Burlesque will be performing “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “Button Up Your Overcoat,” and members of the Tap Cats will be performing “Tea For Two.”

Johnk says, “The show will take us back in time. The men will be in tuxes, the women in evening gowns, and the music from the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. These are songs we usually don’t hear or sing anymore, and I thought it was time to bring them out and enjoy them again. I believe the audience will get swept up in the wonderful music and lyrics and find the performance a delightful way to spend a spring evening.”

Money raised by the gala event will help Dreamwell Theatre continue to offer professional quality performances in Iowa City. In 2001, Dreamwell redefined its mission as “a theater that creates challenging, innovative and inclusive theatrical experiences. . . With each production, we reaffirm our identity as a theatre of exploration.”

Audience members are encouraged to dress up for the evening. Johnk recommends “either period clothing or that contemporary evening gown/suit that has been hanging in the closet waiting to be worn.” However, she adds, “We also will certainly not turn anyone away for more casual attire!”

Admission is $15. Tickets available at the door, or for advance ticket information see our Tickets page. Sponsored in part by City Circle Acting Company.
