The Community Foundation of Johnson County Iowa was formed in the summer of 2000 and officially launched that fall.
Civic-minded individuals began meeting over a year before the launch to research community foundations, which are organized to manage and distribute endowment funds for local nonprofit projects. The organizing committee interviewed foundations in similar communities around the Midwest, surveyed foundations in Iowa, and investigated community attitudes. As a result of the positive response to this work, the organizing committee evolved into a board of directors, which incorporated the Community Foundation, and gained 501(c)3 status in August of 2000.
