Monday, February 08, 2010; 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Iowa Artisans Gallery
Artists from the gallery and the local community have banded together to honor and support fellow artist, woodworker Russell Karkowski. Russell was injured in a fall in November, 2009. A self-employed woodworker, Russell helped start Iowa Artisans Gallery twenty-five years ago and continued as one of five owners. A pillar not only of the gallery but of the Iowa City area, Russell has been continuously generous to many friends, local non-profits and schools, donating time, labor and woodworking skills. Woodworkers, his collaborative workshop, was one of several Stevens Drive businesses flooded during the 2008 floods. His community of friends and supporters is nationwide.
Many individuals have commented that they did not fully realize how much in their personal environments was attributed to Russell’s woodworking skills; his pieces are in many local homes. He also supplied businesses with affordable yet classy designs- MidWestOne, River Products, the University of Iowa, and the Englert all have benefited from his skills. He also made an altar for the Dalai Lama’s visit to California.
Artists donating works include printmakers, painters and photographers Alan Weinstein, Claudia McGehee, Carl Homstad, Sarah Lindberg, Mark Tade, Marcia Wegman, Larry Welo, Lennis Moore, Amy Dobrian, Valerie Miller, Suzanne Aunan, Michael A. S. Ryan, Randy Richmond, Beppie Weiss and Barbara Bernier. Additional contributors include metalsmith Louise Rauh; fiber artists Jan Friedman, Patti Zwick, Astrid Bennett and Earlene Giglierano; ceramists Kate Huffman, Marilyn Davis, Judith Miller and Ray Mullen; wood artists Connie Roberts and Nancy Romalov; and jewelers Bethany Young, Dana Noble, Dawn Harbor & Doug Wunder. This is not an auction; items are available for sale as priced and are also featured online for the community of supporters living elsewhere in the country. Proceeds will go to the Karkowski-Schelar family to aid with current and future needs.
In addition to this gallery event celebrating Russell and his creative connections, there will also be a musical fundraiser at the Mill, February 20, featuring music by Lazy Boy, Accoustic Mayhem, and possibly, Big Wooden Radio. An additional celebration of Russell’s return will take place at Old Brick on March 25, 6-9pm. All events are open to the public.
Daily hours for Iowa Artisans Gallery are Monday-Wednesday 10-6pm; Thursday (Downtown Shopping Night) 10am – 7pm; Friday 10-6pm; Saturday 10-5:30 and Sunday 12-4. For more information, please contact the Gallery at 319-351-8686.
